Forging ahead
Article Abstract:
A merger is planned between Hoogovens and British Steel which would create a company ranking third in the world steel market. European steel companies have been hit by a drop in demand within Europe, as well as cheaper imports from Eastern Europe and Asia. The new European currency, the euro, has also speeded up change by providing greater pricing transparency. The merger involves two healthy companies which will benefit from economies of scale, and British Steel should benefit since it has been affected by the high value of pound sterling.
