Fortunes of war
Article Abstract:
Scottish National Party (SNP) head, Alex Salmond, has criticised the United Kingdom government's involvement in the bombing of Serbia, and this view appears to have lost the SNP votes. Men especially oppose Salmond's views, and men had previously tended to be stronger supporters of the SNP than women. Bother the Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties are benefiting from this loss of support for the SNP. The issue of Scottish independence may become less urgent if the SNP performs poorly in elections to the Scottish parliament.

All set for independence?
Article Abstract:
Scotland is to have a new parliament and 51% of those questioned in a Scottish poll favor independence for Scotland. The Scottish National Party (SNP) has pledged to negotiate for independence if it achieves a majority of seats in elections scheduled for May 1999 for the new parliament. There are differences of opinion as to the form that this independence could take. Some of those who seek independence also do not wish for membership of the European Union (EU) while others seek close links with the EU.

Scotland's disarming Braveheart
Article Abstract:
The Scottish National Party (SNP) has strengthened since the Labor government decided to allow devolution for Scotland, which will have its own parliament. The leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond, argues that independence for Scotland would benefit both Scotland and England. The new parliament will give the SNP experience and could thus strengthen its case for independence. The SNP had attacked the Labor party for moving away from socialism, but has since represented itself as in favor of enterprise.
