Fractured polity: amid dull polls, disturbing portents for the future
Article Abstract:
There were low turnouts reported at most of the polling stations for Pakistan's fourth general election in nine years. This was due to the widespread feeling that the election would not solve the problems of the people without the accountability of corrupt politicians. Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League and Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party, believe that Pakistan has a US style two party system, although the provincial polity is becoming more fragmented. The Muhajir Qaumi Movement won a quarter of the seats in the Sind provincial assembly, and there are also other active groups in Sind, such as the extreme Sindhi nationalist groups.

Power grab
Article Abstract:
President Farooq Leghari of Pakistan is accused of setting up a powerful advisory committee to serve his own political ambitions. The Council for Defence and National Security is supposedly a non-political body which will advise those in power. Many believe that the ten-person group, which is chaired by Leghari and includes a military presence, will not be impartial.
