Recent retrospectives of the work of French film maker Cocteau demonstrate why he is widely admired by other film makers. He had a penchant for adding poetic touches such as living arms forming a candelabra in 'La Belle et La Bete' and using and reusing themes from the myths of Orpheus and Oedipus.

'Howard's End' is the best film crafted by producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory and scriptwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. They have collaborated on 14 previous films. Robert Emmet Long's recently published book, 'The Films of Merchant Ivory', is a celebration of their work.

A overrated braggart: Michael Powell
Article Abstract:
Powell thought very highly of his own work and so did many others but he does not deserve to be considered one of the greatest directors of all time. His movies such as 'Peeping Tom' and 'The Red Shoes' contain a streak of sadism.
