Fraying at the edges
Article Abstract:
The referendum in East Timor is leading to demand for autonomy from Aceh and other parts of Indonesia. Troops and police are seeking to control the movement in Aceh, and many other Indonesians have sympathy for the problems of the inhabitants of Aceh, who are Muslims, as are most Indonesians. The Indonesian government has drawn up a law allowing the provinces to have more power, and hopes to discourage separatism in this way. The project is likely to take some time, and there are economic issues that have to be tackled, while separatists seek an urgent solution.

An Asian Balkans?
Article Abstract:
Aceh, Indonesia, is seeking a referendum on independence, and has threatened to declare independence unilaterally if no referendum is held. There have been cases of torture, rape and executions when Aceh was under military rule as part of a drive to control the independence movement by the central government of Indonesia. Aceh accounts for a large part of Indonesia's government revemue, and there is concern that granting independence to Aceh could lead to other parts of Indonesia seeking independence.
