Free to air: newly assertive media pique the government
Article Abstract:
Thailand's media are increasingly assertive and critical of the government, reflecting higher expectations of politicians, a perception of the ruling Chart Thai party as corrupt, and journalists' own sense of their power. Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa and top aides complain the media gives short shrift to their accomplishments, but they do not seem to understand the new public attitude. Conventional politics long consisted of buying votes in the upcountry areas, then replenishing the funds from political graft.

The ideas men
Article Abstract:
The Thai advertising industry is becoming the most prominent in Asia, having gained a reputation for producing advertisements which combine humor, sentimentality and high quality production techniques. Advertising spending in Thailand has risen by an average of more than 20% a year since the beginning of the 1990s, and billings are expected to reach $1.9 billion in 1996. However, some observers believe that the industry will soon see declining growth rates.

Shut up or shut down: government pulls plug on current-affairs show
Article Abstract:
Thailand's scandal-riddled govt shut down the popular, controversial TV current-affairs show Mong Tang Moom in early Feb 1996. Officials say the show's founder and moderator, university professor Chirmsak Pinthong, is biased. A series of radio shows he hosted were also soon killed. Observers say the moves are a serious blow to press freedom in Thailand and that other shows are toning down to avoid angering authorities.
