French shareholders wake up

French shareholders are starting to take a more negative view of the cross-shareholdings which have traditionally been very common among French companies. They are taking their responsibilities more seriously, forcing companies to account in more detail for their actions. This has particularly been the case with Suez group, which is trying to avoid a takeover.

Compass gulps down French purchase
Article Abstract:
Compass of the UK, a contract catering company, is to purchase Eurest Group, the contract catering unit of Accor, a hotel group. However there are concerns about the size of the purchase and Compass' shares fell following news of the deal. They have since recovered, and the deal will mean Compass will be able to take on more business for existing clients.

SCI wins auction for French funeerals giant PFG
Article Abstract:
Service Corporation International (SCI), a funerals company, is to purchase Pompes Funebres Generales (PFG) of Europe, another funerals concern, majority owned by Lyonnaise des Eaux of France, a water and electricity utility. Lyonnaise will use the income to fund its core business acquisiton of Northumbrian Water of the UK.
