Franchise businesses account for 25% of retail sales in the United Kingdom and the market is worth 7 billion pounds sterling per year. However, running a franchise carries risks and potential participants should visit a franchise exhibition and speak to people on the stands. It is also important that interested people have the commitment to work at a franchise business, that they have enough start-up money and that the service or product is viable. Talking to current franchisees is a good way of assessing the support the franchisor gives. Getting legal advice is also important.

JP Morgan springs another surprise

JP Morgan was the leading financial adviser to European companies acquiring in the US in 1995 in terms of value of deals, according to the Acquisitions Monthly magazine league table. It was followed by Credit Suisse First Boston, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. This was the second year running in which a company previously outside the top 10 became the leading adviser. The top financial adviser to UK companies acquiring in the US in 1995 was Goldman Sachs, followed by SBC Warburg and Morgan Stanley.

Morgan snatches Milupa for Nautica

Nutricia of the Netherlands, a specialised foods manufacturer, has acquired Milupa of Germany, a manufacturer of baby food and dietary products. Goldman Sachs had been hired to run the auction which had been limited to large multinationals, Heinz and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Nutricia did not enter the contest until the third round of the process.
