Fundy is first cableco to offer phone service

Fundy Communications, touted as the biggest cable firm in Atlantic, Canada, ventures into the national long-distance telephone market with its launch of phone discount packages. Canada Lingo, at $19.95 per month, offers subscribers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia 500 minutes of long distance in the evening and on weekends to call anywhere in the country. With Maritime Lingo, customers receive the same deal for calls with the Maritimes as well as one month free basic cable, all for $17.95 a month. Fundy is presently running a three-month ad campaign in the two regions to promote the Lingo package.

Halifax papers battle for Sunday readers

The Halifax Herald Ltd., owned by the Dennis family, has launched the Sunday Herald on April 19, 1998, to compete with The Daily News, which was the only provincial paper in Halifax, Canada, with a Sunday edition. The Sunday edition of the Herald has settled at roughly 65 pages after debuting at 100 pages in its April 1998, launching. To date, the Sunday Herald has attracted 52,000 home subscribers. Aside from newspaper ads, the Herald Herald is rolling out a campaign on radio and TV to promote the Sunday edition.

The Halifax explosion

The economic prosperity of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is evident in the way its advertising agency business is booming with no end in sight. A notable example is Pulse Marketing which has experienced its best year in 1998 with billings increasing by 25% over those of 1997. Its mergers with Bennet Communications to create another agency is another indication of business growth. The booming state of industry affairs is attributable to quality products, which are at par with those of national agencies, and accessibility.
