Funeral rights
Article Abstract:
Christianity has flourished in Tana Toraja, the highlands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, mainly through its willingness to tolerate rituals based on animist beliefs. Clergymen have taken particular care to allow the elaborate funeral rites practised in the region to continue. However, outside forces, including tourism and income from local people working abroad, are now threatening to damage the relationship between Christianity and Torajan rituals. Tourism is encouraging Torajans to take up old values again, and people are also returning to tradition because they feel unable to cope with modernity.

Hotel-based funeral services for executives, called shaso, are only one component of a growing funeral market in Japan. Many companies are marketing their goods and services aggressively to benefit from the funeral market. Japanese people spend up to $47,000 on funerals. Manufacturers are offering their goods as possible funeral gifts, and insurance companies are providing people with the opportunity to pre-purchase their own funerals.
