The military junta ruling Myanmar, the State Law and Order Restoration Council, is enacting a series of reforms designed to loosen up society and dilute international criticism. There is hope economic growth could bring about more political freedom, but progress is apt to be slow.

Relaxed and tightened in Myanmar

Myanmar's State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) is lifting slightly its grip on the country, reopening the universities, freeing political prisoners, and promising a constitutional convention. Few expect the SLORC to surrender its dominance soon.

Article Abstract:
The UN has been slow to pressure military junta ruling Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, to respect human rights. Other problems such as Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cambodia forestall more effort and money being put into the effort to help the Burmese.
