Shin Kanemaru

Kanemaru was the top power-broker in Japan for over 10 years until he was toppled by a bribery scandal in 1992. As a backroom power in the Liberal Democratic Party, he used his influence to keep Noburo Takeshita in the prime minister's office for 3 terms. His downfall changed Japan's politics forever.

Japan's opposition blunders
Article Abstract:
Japan's New Frontier Party, founded by Ichio Ozawa, seemed poised to make a considerable effect on Japanese politics as an opposition party, but its effects have not been felt. Ozawa offered little in the way of actual leadership and reacted to issues instead of countering them.

Kanemaru resigned from his position in his political party after he confessed to taking $4.2 in illegal contributions from a company with organized crime connections. The party selected Keizo Obuchi to replace him, bypassing Kanemaru's choice, Ichiro Ozawa.
