Article Abstract:
The public sector telecom major, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), posted 15 percent rise in net profit to Rs1,073.02 crore for 1997-98 (Rs932.78 crore in 1996-97). MTNL offers telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai. MTNL installed 3.9 lakh additional telephone lines during 1997-98. It floated a Rs700 crore GDR issue in 1997-98. Government stake in MTNL has been reduced to 57 percent. Its earnings per share is estimated at Rs235. VSNL's H1 NET UP 77% TO Rs736 Cr

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), India's international telecommunications services provider, has posted a 77 percent rise in its net profit to Rs736 crore during April-September 1998 (Rs415 crore during April-September 1997). During the period, it also posted a 17 percent rise in its total earnings to Rs3592 crore (Rs3063 crore). It also posted an annualised earnings per share of Rs155 (Rs88). (ag)
