GENEROUS PROVISION FOR SOCIAL SECTORS
Article Abstract:
The Union Budget for 1998-99 has allocated Rs18,310 crore for social sector, a rise of Rs500 crore from 1997-98 revised estimates. This does not include the Rs1,500 crore enhanced allocation to rural development at Rs9,912 crore. The allocation for the department of women and child development has been enhanced by Rs200 crore against the previous year's revised estimates. The budget has allocated an enhanced Rs300 crore for the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme, to cover 100,000 habitations in the next five years. For health and family welfare, the allocation has been enhanced by 34 percent to Rs3,684 crore compared to Rs2,747 crore in 1997-98. The budget allocation for the Department of Education Plan has gone up by nearly 50 percent or Rs1,000 crore over Rs4,245 crore in 1997-98. (gsh)

ORISSA GIVEN Rs80 Cr FOR HIGHWAY WORKS
Article Abstract:
The union government has allocated Rs80 crore for national highway development in Orissa. Of this, Rs30 crore is fixed for original works and another Rs50 crore for externally assisted projects in the state. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed to develop two highway stretches - one on NH5 and the other from Balasore to Kharagpur on NH60 - to four lane standard. NHAI will utilise its existing funds for these projects. The government has already provided the state with Rs18.2 crore for maintenance and repair excluding flood damage repair during 1998-99. (gsh)

BUDGET LAUNCHES SCIENCE ON A FAST-TRACK

The science Budget for 1998-99 has allotted Rs1,391 crore to the Department of Atomic Energy's nuclear power programmes compared to Rs828 crore (1997-98). The Department of Space (DOS) gets Rs1,381 crore (Rs850 crore). Nuclear Power Corporation will get Rs882 crore and internal extra budgetary resource of Rs139 crore. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has been allotted Rs704 crore (Rs440 crore). (rk)
