GERMANY/AUSTRIA: TELEGRAM SERVICES BY TELEKOM
Article Abstract:
Deutsche Telekom is abolishing international telegram services as a result of falling demand. It is estimated that no more than 70,000 telegrams will be sent in year 2000, compared with almost 1.6mn ten years ago. The decision does not affect telegram services within Germany, which were taken over by Deutsche Post AG in 1998. Meanwhile Telekom Austria is not planning to discontinue international telegram services. However, telegrams within Austria continue to account for the majority. In the past two years the number of telegrams sent in Austria has fallen by 10-12%. Telekom Austria is offering additional services to telegrams. Beside flowers and chocolate, it will soon offer to send CDs with the telegrams.
