GET TO KNOW YOUR ONIONS
Article Abstract:
India produces 42 lakh tonnes of onion per annum in 4 lakh hectares of land. Onion is grown as a commercial crop in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Orissa, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra contributes 27 percent to the total onion production of India. Nasik accounts for 35 percent of the production in Maharashtra. Lasalgaon in Nasik district of Maharashtra is the biggest onion market in India and Asia. Onion is grown both as a rabi and kharif crop. The kharif crop onion has a shelf life of 2-3 months and the rabi crop 4-5 months. Onion is a perishable commodity and requires speedy transportation. The farmers who grow onions do not have storage facilities. Onion is out of season during June-September and prices rise in these months. India exported 2.5 lakh tonnes of onion during June-October 1998 and its price soared. India had to import onions from Iran to bring down the price. Onion arrives in the market from October. It is necessary to have a policy to support the price of onion. A vegetable price commission should be established to gather information about productivity, cost of production, support price and promotion of exports. (rk) (kvr)
