GUJARAT AIRWAYS MOVES TO SOUTHERN SKIES FOR SURVIVAL

Gujarat Airways, the air taxi company operating from Baroda, has shifted to Mumbai in a bid to stay afloat. Its business has been affected due to the increased presence of Jet Airways and Indian Airlines in Gujarat-bound flights. The company's flights to Baroda, Rajkot, Bhuj and Kandla have been affected. The airlines has taken up a restructuring exercise which will focus on the southern states and Maharashtra. It has commenced operations on the Belgaum-Bangalore-Coimbatore sector. It is also eyeing the Mumbai-Hubli route besides Nanded, Kolhapur and Pune. (uh)

TATAS WITHDRAW PLAN FOR AIRLINE

Tata Industries Ltd has said that it has withdrawn its proposal to start a domestic airline. It had submitted a proposal to start a domestic airline about three and a half years ago. It says that the civil aviation ministry was the main stumbling block to the Rs1475 crore project. This had led to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board postponing its decision on the project five times in recent months. The company says that it has also abandoned the international airport project which was to have been set up at Bangalore. (khr)

JET AIRWAYS FACES TURBULENCE WITH GOVT'S LEASE DIKTAT

The ministry of civil aviation has set July 15, 1998 as the deadline for Jet Airways (JA) to adhere to the recently issued policy guidelines for foreign equity participation in the domestic air transport sector. JA will have to terminate the lease contract for at least four aircraft as the guidelines does not allow domestic operators to lease aircraft from foreign airlines. JA has leased two aircraft from Malaysian Airlines and two from Ansett, Australia's domestc airline. (khr)
