Gamble on the future
Article Abstract:
Indonesian investors have long preferred foreign-currency time deposits in Singapore, preferably in US dollars, but new options are gaining popularity. Much private wealth continues to flow overseas, though few discuss it openly, especially regarding the ethnic Chinese families that are often social scapegoats. Observers distinguish between routine investments and money sent out in crises, to return when events settle down. Old-money families disdain the spendthrift ways of the nouveau riche and second-generation wealthy.

Going home: Aetas are returning to their villages on Mt Pinatubo
Article Abstract:
The Aetas, a Negrito tribe that lives in the Philippines, are moving back to their traditional homeland near Mount Pinatubo, whose volcanic eruptions in Jun 1991 devastated the region. Aeta determination to reclaim their homes reflects their independence, staunchness in the face of adversity and unwillingness to give up their way of life and stay in the lowlands as the Philippine government has ineffectually urged them to do.
