Gannett to buy Newsquest of U.K. for 1.38 billion euros

US-based Gannett Co. announced that it will purchase Newsquest PLC for 904 million pound sterling (1.38 billion euros). The move represents Gannett's expansion into the Europe's rapidly-consolidating publishing industry. Newsquest is the largest publisher of regional newspapers in the UK. Gannett will be acquiring Newsquest through its subsidiary, Gannett UK Ltd. Gannett is considering whether or not to assume or retire Newsquest's debts, which are worth 80 million pound sterling.
