Article Abstract:
The Slovakian government wants to increase passenger car production in the country to 350,000-500,000 units by 2010. Lorry production should grow to 3,000-5,000 units and bus production to 500-800 units. Car components produced by Slovakian companies should have a value of Sk 100bn in 2010, which would mean an almost fivefold increase over 1997. The government is to establish funds to support the vehicle industry. The attractiveness of Slovakia as a location for international car manufacturers is to be improved by legislative measures. The government is to subsidise research and development, technology transfer, training of employees and infrastructure projects.

In Latvia, demand for lamps and lighting is mostly covered by imports. The only lamp manufacturer, the Latvian-German-Dutch company Vermerk is producing about 25mn bulbs annually. Most of them are for export as prices abroad are higher. The company has a capacity of 40mn bulbs. Demand for lighting is completely covered by imports, organised by specialised retailers in Riga. Demand for high quality and design lighting is poor.
