General Motors, Ford had record earnings in quarter

General Motors Corp. (GM) and Ford Motor Corp. posted record earnings for the first quarter of 1999. Both companies' earnings were higher than what analysts had predicted. GM posted $2.06 billion in net income for the period. This represented a 34% rise from the same period in 1998. Ford posted $1.979 billion net income in the first quarter. Ford posted $17.65 billion in net income in 1998.
