Generous to a fault: Manila launches probe into Marcos-era loans

Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos has ordered an investigation of companies which availed of behest loans granted by the administration of Ferdinand Marcos. The loans, which account for $6.1 billion of the national debt, include those extended or covered by Philippine National Bank, Development Bank of the Philippines, National Development Co and Philippine Export and Foreign Loan Guarantee Corp. The probe could have far-reaching political effects as some of the companies under investigation are owned by government officials, including Speaker Jose de Venecia and Finance Sec Ramon del Rosario.

Phone-y competition: Ramos takes on crony capitalism
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos has initiated concrete measures towards the break up of public utility monopolies in the country. As an indication of the administration's efforts against protectionism, Ramos has ordered the break up of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) and the sale of government ownership of Philippine Airlines. In order to provide greater competition in the area of telecommunications, the government must repeal certain laws and decrees that inhibit any form of challenge to PLDT management.
