George Mackay Brown, the poet and novelist from Orkney, Scotland, died on April 13, 1996, at age 74. Mr. Brown's first major literary work, entitled 'Loaves and Fishes,' was published in 1959. Mr. Brown seldom left Orkney; he lived on the island isolated as much as possible from civilization.

Wales-born poet R.S. Thomas, who turned 80 on Mar 29, 1993, has captured much of the undaunted spirit of the laboring Welshman in his English language poetry. Thomas, a clergyman by trade, does not believe that circumstances will improve for the Welsh.
