The market growls
Article Abstract:
The US Forest Service plans higher rents for wilderness cabins, which were originally built in deserted areas that have since become attractive tourist spots. Protests have arisen in Idaho where there are plans for rent rises for 182 cabins. Some holders or these cabins are wealthy, but others are retired and rely on pensions for their income. Opposition to the increase in Idaho is also linked to opposition to federal government, and the wider reform plans of the Forest Service.

Bleeding trees: the Forest Service
Article Abstract:
The US Forest Service is much more concerned with protecting itself than the nation's trees. The more trees that are allowed to be cut down, the more money Congress appropriates to the Forest Service. The task of protecting forests while making sure there is enough timber should not be up to one agency.

Dark doings in forests: logging
Article Abstract:
A proposal by the US Forest Service to eliminate logging in 62 national forests was well received by environmentalists. Closer inspection of the plan caused suspicions of its true intent to be raised, as the timber industry may have had a hand in the decision.
