George Robertson punches above his weight
Article Abstract:
A report on the United Kingdom defense review has been released in Jul 1998 by the defense secretary, George Robertson. The Labor party has sometimes appeared reckles in its desire to cut defense spending. Military threats to the UK do not appear to have increased, and Robertson is reassuring those who fear that the government could neglect defense. The UK will be spending on preparations for interventions further afield than Europe. The lack of reform in military policy means that the government's plans for a comprehensive spending review should be viewed with less optimism.

The Turkish-Israeli affair
Article Abstract:
Turkey and Israel signed a military co-operation agreement in 1996 and the partnership could be extended to Jordan. The Israeli and Turkish navies have also carried out joint manoeuvers, and their relationship is viewed with suspicion by Syria. Cyprus and Greece are also concerned about the link. Turkey emphasises the economic aspects of the link, and the two countries aim to expand trade to each other. Israeli aviation companies have received orders from Turkey, which is also considering buying an early-warning radar system from Israel.

Canada battles with its vision of peace
Article Abstract:
Canada's defense policy is affected by a budget squeeze, despite the country's peacekeeping tradition. Canada's peacekeeping role has become less important. Meanwhile, Canada is investing in military hardware, partly in response to calls from the US. The upgrade follows a period of cuts in defense spending. The US and Canada could come into conflict over US missile policy which may contravene a treaty against the spread of ballistic missiles.
