George Wallace
Article Abstract:
George Wallace was a Democratic politician who spoke for factory workers and poor farmers against big government and elites. He opposed foreign aid and welfare for loafers, and supported low taxes. He performed well in opinion polls in 1972 and was seen as a likely presidential candidate against Richard Nixon. He was left paralysed after being shot in May 1972, and this affected his bid to be presidential candidate, but he later backed Jimmy Carter's candidacy. Many of Wallace's themes were later taken up by Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party.

Article Abstract:
Galina Starovoitova was a Russian politician who saw a group of reformers in parliament as necessary for democracy, and President Boris Yeltsin as preferable to possible alternatives who could be financial barons or potential dictators. She became interested in Armenia through academic studies, and was elected to the Congress of People's Deputies from Armenia prior to its independence. She was the eighth Duma member to be murdered since 1993, though in other cases, financial disputes may have been the motive.
