East Asia's delicate balance
Article Abstract:
East Asia has been affected by drops in value for currencies, an increase in nationalism, and discontent. Economic contraction is likely to affect a number of economies such as Indonesia and Malaysia, while nuclear tests in India and Pakistan show that nationalism is still a major force. China is less affected and has succeeded in avoiding a currency devaluation. The US has helps develop rescue packages from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and other organizations. The balance of power has been unpset by these developments, and the US and China have little common ground.
