Onward, Christian Democrats
Article Abstract:
The German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) needs to tackle the crisis which has arisen from its financial scandals, and which have led to the resignation of the leader, Wolfgang Schauble. This is important for democracy in Germany, as well as for the party itself. Helmut Kohl and his colleagues at the time when he held the chairmanship of the party should be open about events at the time so that the party can tackle its problems. This will allow voters to trust the party again.

A test for Christian Democrats
Article Abstract:
Elections are being held in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, which will affect the chances of Volker Ruhe, former defense minister, of becoming the new leader of the Christian Democratic Union. A poor performance in the election will lessen his chances of gaining the leadership. Another contender is Angela Merkel, though some see her as inexperienced and too far on the political left. The party will decide on the leadership in April 2000, and an elder may be brought in, like Bernhard Vogel, if no consensus can be reached.
