Germany's reform battle
Article Abstract:
The German government is seeking to achieve tax and budget reforms in a context of electoral defeats for the main partners in the coalition, the Social Democrats. Traditional supporters of the Social Democrats are most concerned about the reforms, and this is of particular concern to chancellor, Gerhard Schroder. There is concern that the national debt has grown to 61% of Germany's gross domestic product, and at the high cost of debt charges. The proposed reforms include indexing pensions to inflation rather than to wages.

Bismarck's steed: Germany
