Getting down to the nitty-gritty
Article Abstract:
Japan's largest consulting firm, Japan Management Assn (JMA), has successfully established a strong presence in Europe. Since the establishment of the European subsidiary in 1981, it has attracted an impressive line-up of clients, including French car maker Renault, Italian appliance giant Merloni Eletredomestici and Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler. Unlike other Japanese firms, JMA Europe exports Japanese know-how instead of products. Its business is to help European companies understand and implement Japanese production techniques, such as high-level quality control, integrated production lines and just-in-time delivery systems. However, the company stresses that its prime objective is to lend assistance in the 'nitty-gritty business of production and design engineering' and has no intention of introducing the motivational gimmicks that are popular in Japan.

Article Abstract:
The planned political and monetary union of EC member nations is fraught with problems. Aside from the rejection of the Maastricht treaty in Denmark in the Jun 1992 referendum, the Community is grappling with squabbles over the instability of the European Monetary System and the GATT. The recession is also hindering European integration, with the EC being blamed for national troubles. The crisis of confidence was somewhat alleviated after the Edinburgh summit in which UK prime minister John Major succeeded in encouraging European leaders to set aside their differences and agree on several issues, including a new five-year budget and EC expansion. However, despite the success at Edinburgh, it is still unclear when the gap between EC members states will finally disappear to pave the way for the much-needed free and fair trade in the region.

Celebrating a divorce at 3, Rue D'Antin
Article Abstract:
Compagnie Financiere de Paribas was nationalized by the French government in 1982, but the government severed those ties recently as the bank was de-nationalized. Nationalization is not seen as having harmed Paribas, but it did exact a price in momentum. The 115-year-old bank has a $4 billion investment portfolio. Chmn Michel Francois-Poncet hopes to bring Paribas into the top echelons of international investment banks. Some analysts predict that the bank will find it difficult to become a leader in international investment banking because of an inadequate presence in centers such as New York City and Tokyo.
