Getting malled by building binge
Article Abstract:
Thailand's commercial real estate development industry has produced an oversupply of business and commercial space, which is further aggravated by the economic slump the country is experiencing. The vacancies in the malls reflect the relative immaturity of the commercial real estate development in the country, since many malls do not have a specific theme with which to regularly attract customers. Despite the many vacancies, commercial space supply has increased by another 11.4% or 297,000 sq meters of additional retail space for 1996. Vacancy in the city is estimated at 21%, while in the suburbs, vacancies may reach as high a 50%.
