Getting their Wei; Beijing grabs the last big dissident
Article Abstract:
Beijing's re-arrest of prominent dissident Wei Jingsheng on Nov 21 heralds the end of its arrest-and-release cycle timed to international criticism. With a leadership struggle underway, party leaders have arrested or expelled virtually every internal critic, save a few who advocate order over freedom. Wei's upcoming second trial for trying to overthrow the govt will certainly bring a conviction, with a sentence ranging from 10 years in prison to death. In Mar the UN Commission on Human Rights meets in Geneva.

Slamming the door: Wei's sentence is part of a hard-line revival
Article Abstract:
China's harsh 14-year sentence for dissident intellectual Wei Jingsheng, passed Dec 13, 1995, heralds an even harder line against opposition both internally and externally. Many in China compare the atmosphere to that of June 1989, and political turmoil as Deng Xiaoping's demise approaches will only strengthen the hard-liners. China is now openly defiant of foreign criticism, dismissing much of it as an effort to meddle in its own internal affairs and contain China before its might grows.

Back to the future
Article Abstract:
Whoever succeeds in taking over leadership of China when the elderly Den Xiaoping dies is unlikely to make bold changes in economic policy. On the plus side, China has managed to reduce inflation rates and increase foreign reserves and investments. On the minus side, state enterprises are hemorrhaging money. Political doctrine favors limiting competition and consolidating power in a strong central government that will then redistribute wealth. Both these moves have worrisome implications.
