Article Abstract:
The failure of Scandinavia's financial firms to merge across borders has prompted several such firms to merge across industrial sectors. The Danish bank Unibank, the mortgage-credit firm Nykredit, and the insurance firm Trygg have announced their intention to merge pending regulatory approval.

Government deregulation was not the only cause of the breakdown of the segmented and controlled banking system built through the 1960s. Any system based on inaccurate, regulated prices would eventually break down. Once protection from foreign competitors was gone the system globalized.

A single market for bank shares?

US bank stocks have sharply outperformed the broader securities market since Oct 1990. Many banks in Japan and Europe plan to trade their stock in ways that more closely resemble US banks' practices. In both Japan and Germany, lower price/earnings ratios for bank stocks may result.
