Going the distance
Article Abstract:
Nearly 50% of all MBA students in the United Kingdom study by distance learning. Students receive text, video and audio tapes and they have a tutor who supports them through the course. However, each school is different and students' access to local study centres, libraries and residential courses vary. Foreign students often do not have the same level of support, although computer technology and the Internet have improved standards. Henley Management College is running a pilot project with 60 managers from IBM across Europe. Videoconferencing is also being used.

Is there a doctor in the company?
Article Abstract:
Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses are designed to give managers the practical skills necessary to cope with the demands of industry, however, there is a growing recognition that managers also need to be able to think strategically and intellectually about problem-solving. The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme trains managers to do this. The course takes four years of part-time study and Henley Management College, in the UK, which runs a DBA course, currently has 170 students.

Will a master serve you well?
Article Abstract:
Employing Masters of business administration (MBAs) in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) may be of benefit to those companies within a fast moving industry since they can bring options and perspectives which internal managers may not be able to provide. Money plays an important part in the ability of an SMB to pay an adequate wage as many graduates have student loans to pay off. Some business schools are forming links with small business to enable MBAs to gain some insight into smaller companies.
