Article Abstract:
US public opinion appears to prefer to forgive President Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair. Some Clinton supporters argue that he should not be impeached since his wrongdoing is not serious enough, though they may also prefer him to resign. The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee has voted in favor of an impeachment inquiry. Clinton should be punished for breaking the law, and a rebuke may be the best compromise, but there should be openness about how a decision is arrived at to decide on the punishment.

Article Abstract:
An impeachment process has started in the US following a vote by the House of Representatives' Judicial Committee. Supporters of Clinton may seek to present him as an international statesman and blame the Republicans for having exaggerated Clinton's wrongdoing. There is still a lack of clarity as to what constitutes impeachable behavior. Clinton could make a further act of contrition as a compromise, but it is not clear that this solution would be accepted by the House of Representatives.
