Article Abstract:
Serbia's economy needs extensive work to make the country's standard of living tolerable for its residents. It is far below the condition before the civil war, which began in 1991, and sanctions are still possible since they were suspended, not revoked. Other changes needed are described.

Cosic lost his presidency in the wake of action by Radical Party leader Vojislav Seselj. Cosic was reviled by the nationalistic Radicals for his attempts to bring about a peace accord with the Croats. His political enemies suspected him of planning a coup d'etat.
