Growing apart
Article Abstract:
German economic growth is slower than that of France, and the difference is widening in 1st qtr 1999. Germany has been harder hit by Russia' economic problems and the Asian economic crisis. German business confidence and investment were not helped by government policies under former finance minister, Oskar Lafontaine, while France benefits from strong domestic demand. This economic divergences makes finding a monetary policy suitable for both economies more difficult. Both France and Germany face high unemployment, with a need for labor market reforms.
