Gun-shy
Article Abstract:
Stock prices in Thailand fell 5.6% during one day of heavy trading on Aug 25 1997. Reasons for this may have included the continuing drastic problems of the baht, or the Bank of Thailand's announcement that it had committed more than 75% of national reserves during failed attempts to protect the baht, but a press announcement by Interior Minister Sanoh Thienthong about the threat from communism was also influential. This seems an unlikely threat, and Sanoh had not intended to influence the stock market, but experts believe that, in Thailand's current problems, politicians should take care over what they say.

Hard times roll: no end in sight for economic, political crises
Article Abstract:
Thailand's economy and financial system is in poor shape and some Bangkok businessmen and other concerned groups are planning to bypass the government, going straight to King Bhumibol Aduladej to seek salvation. There is a general desire for political reform, but there are concerns that parliament may vote against a draft constitution. The managed flotation of the baht allowed it to sink to 30 to the dollar, although it is currently breaching 32. Analysts have accused Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya of waiting too long before turning to the International Monetary Fund for emergency credit.
