Manila takes bullish view of economy, but some economists are less optimistic
Article Abstract:
Optimism about the Philippine economy's prospects for 1996 runs high among the country's economic officials. Some economists, however, are not as confident. According to Socioeconomic Planning Sec. Cielito Habito, GNP growth will be at 6% for 1995, while the agricultural sector will recover from natural disasters that hit the country during the year. He also predicted that manufacturing output and investments will increase further in 4th qtr. 1995. The inflation rate is also forecast to slow down further in 1996. This was disputed by some economists, who believe the inflation will average between 8% and 9% in 1995.

Pros say foreign interest to fuel Philippines
Article Abstract:
The Philippine stock market acquired a new record of almost 1% above its previous record in July 1996 with hopes that it will go higher by 3% or more brought about by foreign buying. The growth was led by Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co., Petron Corp., San Miguel Corp. and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. A healthy economic situation, as seen with single-digit inflation and steady growth, is expected to attract foreign investors.

Manila defense is alimentary
Article Abstract:
Investors are wary over an early economic recovery for the Philippines. At the rate it is going, stock performances of even growth firms like Jollibee Foods and SM Prime Holdings are not enough to entice incoming investors. The market keeps a wait-and-see position, giving President Estrada's administration enough room to recoup its policies and strategies, in order to set the stage for the country's economic recovery.
