HDFC is a leader in housing finance. It made a total income of Rs395.37 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99, an increase of 19.20 percent over that in the same period of 1997-98. Its loan disbursals increased by 43 percent to Rs485.28 crore. Individuals accounted for 67 percent of its loans of Rs6,944.07 crore and the corporates for 32 percent. Disbursals of loans to individuals show a growth of 32 percent, a pointer to HDFC's focus on the retail segment. Wipro Ltd is engaged in information technology, consumer and health care, lighting and finance. Its sales increased by about 9 percent to Rs1373.15 crore in 1997-98 while its net profit increased by almost 90 percent to Rs107.88 crore. Wipro Finance recorded a loss in 1997-98. The company will be affected by the 4 percent import tax as it imports about 30 percent of its raw material requirements. It will also be affected by the increased levy of tax on branded goods.
