The net profit of Hero Honda (HH) increased by 40 percent to Rs22.92 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99. Its sales volume rose to 113,568 vehicles (90,368 vehicles in the same period of 1997-98). In 1997-98, it sold 407,564 vehicles. Its major product is its 4-stroke fuel-efficient motorcycles. HH raised its installed capacity from 5 lakh motorcycles per annum to 7 lakh motorcycles per annum at a cost of Rs110 crore. Honda of Japan holds 26 percent stake in HH. Hero Honda is the unrivalled market leader in the motorcycle segment with a market share of 47 percent. Its newly introduced Street model is expected to reach a sales figure of 39,000 bikes in 1997-98. Sales volume has risen by 52 percent in 1997-98 while operating profit margins have expanded by 3.5 percent in the past two years. The company's unique selling proposition is its 4 stroke fuel efficient technology and its modern production process. Hero Honda is set to expand its production base from 4.5 lakh motorcycles to 7 lakh motorcycles per annum. Its installed capacity is expected to touch a level of 2.198 million by 2001 AD. Its exports are also likely to increase to 19,500 bikes in 1997-98 from 15,000 bikes in 1996-97. But the company may have to introduce more powerful 4 stroke bikes to meet the keen competition. Its scrip is traded at Rs1130 at present. (uh)

Indo Matsushita Appliances (IMA) manufactures the National brand of electric cooker. It has a 90 percent market share in the electric cookers segment. It sold about 256,600 cookers in 1996- 97. It has also launched a mixer grinder and managed to market 37,000 pieces in 1996-97. In 1996-97, the turnover of IMA grew by 32 percent to Rs34.16 crore. It posted a net profit of Rs1.43 crore. The balance accumulated loss to be written off is Rs2.20 crore. For 1997-98, the company reported a turnover of Rs31.79 crore with net profit of Rs0.78 crore. In the second half of 1997- 98, it incurred a loss of Rs0.01 crore which may get wiped out in 1998-99. Its scrip is currently traded at Rs32.50. (uh)
