HI-TECH FLOWER AUCTION HOUSE TO BLOOM IN BANGALORE
Article Abstract:
The Agricultural and Processed Food Exports Development Authority (Apeda) and the Karnataka Agro Industries Corporation (KAIC) plan to set up an auction house for flowers in Bangalore. The auction house will cater to Indian and global markets. Apeda is holding talks with KAIC on the share of equity in the Rs30 crore project. KAIC will provide 7.5 acres of land. The auction house will be run by the flower growers' association. The auction house will be similar to the Belgian auction house at Aalst, Veiling Flora. Apeda is trying to rope in the South Indian Floriculture Association to run the auction house. It plans to build three auction halls with infrastructure like cold storage and other facilities. (rk)

Rs500-CRORE PLAN TO BOOST KARNATAKA HORTICULTURE
Article Abstract:
The Karnataka government has drawn up a Rs500 crore plan to boost horticulture in the state. The plan has already been drafted by the Karnataka Horticulture Federation and has sought for a World Bank loan. The state government has invested Rs10 crore to implement the house-own garden and Jeevan Marg schemes for the up-liftment of poor farmers. Apart from this, another Rs30 crore has been earmarked for drip irrigation schemes. (gsh)

Rs3.5-CR PROJECT TO COMBAT PHYTOPHTHORA
Article Abstract:
The Indian Institute of Spice Research at Calicut has set up a National Network of Phytophthora Diseases of Horticultural Crops with an investment of Rs3.5 crore. The network also includes 9 co-ordinating centres. Phytophthora is a pathogen which causes quick wilt disease in pepper, the abnormal leaf fall in rubber and the nut fall disease in arecanut. It also affects cocoa, coconut and some vegetables. (khr)
