HIGH SOFTWARE STAFF TURNOVER IN INDIA WORRIES ALCATEL

The telecom company, Alcatel has expressed concern about the high turnover of software employees in India. The attrition rate of software professionals in India is estimated at 19 percent. New employees require long training periods to master the technology involved. Alcatel has set up an Alcatel Development Centre (ADC) in Chennai. It has appointed 88 software engineers in July 1997. These professionals were sent to Europe for specialised training in telecom software. The company intends to convert ADC into a 100 percent Indian management team to prevent software professionals from leaving the company. (gs)

IRIDIUM TO LAUNCH SERVICES IN INDIA BY MONTH END

Iridium is launching its satellite telephone service by end of November 1998. It launched its international satphone service on October 30, 1998. It will offer satellite based telephone and paging service. It will provide satellite-cellular link up service in February 1999. Iridium India has received its first batch of handsets in Mumbai. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has not cleared the tariff rates for the satellite telephone system as yet. (rk)

The turnover of Pentafour Communications has increased by 52.41 percent to Rs27.8 crore in the first half of 1998-99. Its net profit has increased by 39.08 percent to Rs5.16 crore. Exports account for Rs6.45 crore of the total turnover. It training division posted a turnover of Rs12.87 crore. It has set up a multi-purpose employment oriented training centre in Chennai and 45 Pentasoft centres all over India. (vv)
