IN THE VANGUARD OF THE PATENT RUSH
Article Abstract:
Several Indian scientists and inventors are filing applications for patents. Patents will enable scientists to commercialise their inventions and earn money. The number of applications in patent offices in India increased to 10,000 in 1997-98 (5,330 applications in 1994-95). The number of Indian applications in foreign countries increased to 135 (64 in 1994) in the US Patent Office and to 24 in the European Patent Office (14 in 1994) in 1997. Government research organisations like the Council for Industrial & Scientific Research (CSIR), Department of Biotechnology and Indian Council for Medical Research and private institutions like Sri AMM Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre and Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Scientific and Medical Research, have filed applications for patents in foreign countries. In 1997- 98, CSIR's 40 laboratories filed 90 patent applications in foreign countries. Several Indian universities plan to raise funds by patenting research findings due to reduction in government funding. (vv)
