HMT SHOWS 5.23% DROP IN NET SALES FOR Q2

HMT Ltd has shown a decline of 5.23 percent in net sales to Rs168.46 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 1998 compared to Rs177.76 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 1997. It has registered a net loss of Rs56.01 crore in the second quarter of 1998-99 against Rs43 crore in the second quarter of 1977-98. The company's performance has been affected by the slowdown in the machine tools sector and a lack of working capital in its watch division. It has decided to hive of its watches, tractors and machine tools divisions into separate companies. (khr)

Air-India's (AI) engineering division which for the first time has taken up non-aviation repair jobs, had posted an income of about Rs20 crore in 1997-98. Among non-aviation clients, power companies will attract the main focus by the airline, as gas- turbine engines used in power plants will develop problems similar to aircraft engines. AI uses advanced avionics workshop, which is provided with latest technology that will help AI to take outside contracts for repair and servicing. (gs)

UB SEES 10.4% DROP IN PBT

United Breweries Ltd (UB) suffered a 10.4 percent fall in its profit before tax at Rs3.62 crore in the third quarter ended December 31, 1998 (Rs4.04 crore in the same period of 1997). This was due to a 79 percent decline in its other income and a 73 percent increase in interest costs and net lease rentals. Its sales grew by 13.25 percent. Its gross profit fell by 8.7 percent.
