HSBC Bank Malaysia reports 1st-half loss

HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd. posted a loss in the first-half of 1999. The bank posted a 531.2 million ringgit (130.2 million euros) loss for the six-month period ending on June 30. The loss represented the first for HSBC in recent history. During the same period in 1998, the bank posted 21.2 million ringgit in profits. Retained earnings of 275 million ringgit were eliminated by the losses.

Chase's second-quarter net jumped 30%

Chase Manhattan Corp. posted an improvement of 30% in its net income for the second-quarter of 1999. Chase is the third-largest bank in the US. The bank reported $1.39 billion (1.34 billion euros) in quarterly net income. During the same period in 1998, Chase posted $1.07 billion. The bank's income increased 25% to $1.35 billion, not including one-time special items in both quarters.

Greece's Piraeus says profit surged during first half
Article Abstract:
Piraeus Bank announced that it posted an improvement in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. Piraeus's profits for the period reached 44.3 billion drachmas (136.5 million euros). According to the Greek-based bank, group profits for the year is expected to go beyond 75 billion drachmas. Group member Xiosbank doubled its profits to 7.8 billion drachmas.
