HUMS in the Pacific
Article Abstract:
A workshop sponsored by Australia's Defense Science and Technology Organization has declared that interest in health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) is growing among military users. While HUMS development in years past has been spearheaded by civilian organizations, the military establishment has taken a keen interest in the technology to stretch its budget to the limit. The trend towards outsourcing of military aircraft support has also pushed military research on HUMS.

What's the point of HUMS?
Article Abstract:
The case for deploying health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) in military helicopters has been bolstered by the loss of an Apache rotorcraft during the Kosovo conflict. The Apache apparently was lost partly because of the failure of a mechanical system. While HUMS' value to military aircraft may not readily be apparent, several studies have demonstrated its worth in at least some missions, especially in peacetime.
