Hard truths for Softbank
Article Abstract:
Softbank is a Japanese Internet company and Masayoshi Son is its president. The company has led a consortium that can acquire Nippon Credit Bank. The company's stock price rose to give it a market value of nearly 200 billion US dollars in Feb 2000, but the stock price then fell after bad news. The company's problems include divisions between Son and chief financial officer, Yoshitaka Kitao. There are concerns about Softbank's Internet empire, and its ability to absorb funds. Softbank is moving away from older businesses such as Ziff Davis, an earlu acquisition, to focus on the Internet. Capital gains have been generated, but little cash.
