Harvard management expert dismisses forecasts of turmoil for Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
A study conducted by management expert Michael Enright from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business Administration concludes that Hong Kong's prospects after its return to Chinese rule are much brighter than those predicted by 'gloom-mongers.' The study avoids the issue of politics and instead focuses on Hong Kong's enduring advantages over other Asian countries, such as its strategic location, entrepreneurial spirit and managerial expertise. The study was sponsored by the Hong Kong business community.

As mainland Chinese immigrate to Hong Kong, residents leave, both looking for a better life
Article Abstract:
The growing number of mainland Chinese immigrating to Hong Kong has resulted in an increasing number of residents leaving the country. About 62,000 Hong Kong residents emigrated in 1994, while immigrants from China increased by 16% to 38,200. Most Chinese immigrate to Hong Kong in search of a better life while residents fear the uncertain fate of Hong Kong upon its return to China in 1997. Immigration has also increased competition for low-skill jobs and demand for social services.

Hong Kong airport accord raises hope for the resolution of other 1997 issues
Article Abstract:
The UK and China have signed financial-support agreements for the new Chek Lap Kok Airport and a connecting railroad in a move that may clear the way for the resolution of other issues connected to the UK's 1997 turnover of Hong Kong to China. The two countries also bared China's support for two franchise agreements related to the new airport. However, the opening of the new airport has been moved from Jul. 1, 1997, to Apr. 1998.
