Haves and have-nots
Article Abstract:
Economic reforms carried out under Deng Xiaoping's leadership since 1978 have given rise to social ferment in China. Disparities in income have worsened in the cities and between urban dwellers and rural inhabitants. Displays of wealth against a background of poverty have become more common. In addition, resistance to central rule has prompted the Peking government to assert its authority in Tibet and Xinjiang. Sino-centrism, or the nationalistic belief that Chinese culture is superior and that China will rise to superpower status, remains pervasive.

Fade to black: Chinese peasants clamouring for free elections attracted a crack news team that recorded their fight. They won, but now are asking why their story never aired
Article Abstract:
The Xiguxian File is a documentary about real, contemporary people and events, recording the Chinese peasants of Xiguxian fight for free elections. However, the documentary has been banned for general release, although it had been aimed at national TV viewership. The reason for the ban is a matter of conjecture. It may be because it was due to be aired just a week before the anniversary of the Tiannanmen disturbance, although the villagers' lawyer believes it may be because top leaders do not want to send false signals to all villages in China.

Stirring fury: private women's groups scorned by conference move
Article Abstract:
The Non-Governmental Organizations, involved in the UN international women's conference in China, Sep 4-11, 1995, have been moved to a remote resort town near the Great Wall, an hour away from the main meeting. Women's groups are angered by the move but no official threat to withdraw the meeting from China has been issued by the UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. The Chinese government is probably concerned about the impact of women activists on the society, especially on issues such as economic disparity and human rights.
